Event #50 WSOP 2012

No-Limit Hold'em -- PlayGames360.eu & WSOP 2012

 Peter Vilandos Wins
It’s not as if it hadn’t already happened during the 2012 World Series of Poker, but it is still a bit of a weird feeling when a tournament goes overtime. The excitement and anticipation of a dramatic finish builds up during the final scheduled day and then…nothing. No bracelet winner. The remaining players have to go get some sleep and come back to finish during a day they were never supposed to reach. It’s like they are trespassing on the other events’ turf. But like it or not (and who doesn’t like bonus poker), a fourth day was in order for 2012 WSOP Event #50: $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em. Fortunately, a fifth day was not required is it took less than three hours for the final three players to be narrowed to one. That one: Peter Vilandos, who notched the third bracelet of his career and just shy of $1 million.
Peter Vilandos is not exactly a household name, but he has been playing at a high level for a long time. He has recorded tournament cashes dating back to 1990, with his first cash at the WSOP coming in 1993. He earned two bracelets prior to this one, the first coming in 1995 in the $1,500 Pot-Limit Hold’em event ($148,500) and the next 14 years later in $1,500 No-Limit Hold’em ($607,256). Vilandos has six other final table appearances at the World Series of Poker. With this most recent win, he has eclipsed the $3 million mark in career earnings.
Vilandos was in third place of the three players to make it to Day 4, holding 3.955 million chips. Just ahead of him was Kyle Julius with 4.435 million and leading the way was Dan Smith with 6.62 million chips. Vilandos came right out of the gate firing, taking a 1.245 million pot from Julius, allowing him to swap places with his opponent. Over the next hour, it was up and down for Vilandos, but mostly up, as he was able to grab the chip lead. Though he was already the chip leader, the turning point of the day came with the first of Sunday’s two eliminations.
Smith and Vilandos got into a raising war pre-flop, eventually getting all-in. Smith was in a great position to double-up, holding A♠-K♠ against Vilandos’ A♣-T. The flop was great for Smith, offering all low cards, but the turn produced the T♠, giving Vilandos a pair. The river was a blank and Smith was out of the tournament in 3rd place.
Going into heads-up play, Peter Vilandos had a sizable chip lead over Kyle Julius, 9.2 million to 5.9 million. And that lead just got bigger and bigger. Julius was never able to gain a foothold. On the final hand, Julius moved all-in pre-flop for 2.1 million with A♠-5♠ and Vilandos made the call with A♣-J♠. None of the community cards were of any consequence and Peter Vilandos won his third bracelet and $952,694.

Brian Rast On Top After Day 1 of The Big One

Brian Rast On Top After Day 1 of The Big OneAmerican Brian Rast leads the way after Day 1 of the $1 million buy-in Big One for One Drop No-Limit Hold’em event #55 at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas.
The Vegas-based pro bagged up on 10,710,000 chips after nine levels of play in the Amazon Room of the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to hold a healthy lead over 12-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth (8,395,000).
The opening day began with bags of glamour and excitement as the Cirque du Soleil gave a fantastic performance while all the entrants were announced to the fans in front of the ESPN cameras.

Justin Smith Exits First

As expected, 48 players started the richest tournament in poker history, although just 37 remain after Day 1 with Florida’s Justin Smith the first to hit the rail. He lost a huge hand for almost all his chips just before the opening break when his eight-high straight was beaten by Frenchman Frederique Banjout’s nut flush. Smith was gone in 48th place on the first hand after the break when his Q 5♠ couldn’t overcome the A 10 held by Rast.
Two-time bracelet winner Rast then eliminated Vegas’ Andrew Robl after making the nut flush against the latter’s pair of kings. Robl and Rast got all the chips into the middle on a Q♣ 8♣ 4♣ flop, with the latter tabling A♣ K♠ and the former showing K♣ K. Robl was ahead, even through the 9 turn, but the 9♣ river gave Rast the club flush for the knockout.

Phil Ivey Still Alive

Also starting Day 2 are players such as Phil Ivey (26th on 2,840,000), Sam Trickett (sixth on 6,700,000), Ben Lamb (eighth on 5,770,000), Antonio Esfandiari (fourth on 6,880,000), Daniel Negreanu (36th on 470,000) and Jason Mercier (14th on 4,210,000), as well as event organiser and Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberté (seventh on 6,555,000).
Of course, nine other players exited the event early, and they were Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Erik Seidel, Nick Schulman, Jonathan Duhamel, Eugene Katchalov, Jens Kyllönen, Giovanni Guarascio, Paul Phua and Michael ‘The Grinder’ Mizrachi.

Michael Mizrachi Crashes in 39th

Florida’s Mizrachi was eliminated in 39th place when losing out to veteran Mike Sexton. Three-time bracelet winner Mizrachi shoved all-in for his last 180,000 chips while holding 3♠ 2♣ on a A♣ K♣ J♠ 5♣ board, only for Sexton to call with Q J♣. The 10 came on the river and that was Mizrachi’s million-dollar event ended.
Day 2 will see the field reduced to the nine-handed final table as they all chase the $18,346,673 top prize from the enormous $42,666,672 prize pool. However, even making ninth place will be rewarded with a $1,109,333 pay day.
No doubt all the Day 1 survivors will bring their A games today, with the railbirds sure to be thrilled by some exciting play.
